Where tourists can throw away trash in Tokyo

Public bins are limited, but the correct response is straightforward: match the waste to a clearly labeled on-site bin or carry it back to your accommodation.

Use this disposal decision guide

Bottle or can from a vending machine

Look for the container return box beside the same vending-machine bank. Use it only for the indicated drink containers.

Packaging from food you just bought

Use a customer bin only when the shop provides one and the labels accept that waste. Otherwise keep it with you.

Waste from your hotel room

Use the room or floor bins and follow any separation labels. Ask the front desk about batteries, aerosols, or larger items.

Waste from a park, station, or venue

Use only bins provided on site and follow their labels. A recycling opening is not a general-purpose trash can.

Battery or power bank

Do not place lithium batteries in an ordinary public bin. Ask the retailer, hotel, or municipality for an approved collection route.

No suitable bin nearby

Seal the item in a small carry bag and take it back to your accommodation. This is the normal safe fallback in Japan.

Avoid these common mistakes

  • Do not leave a bag beside a full or locked bin.
  • Do not treat PET, can, or bottle slots as mixed-waste bins.
  • Do not put batteries, aerosols, or hot liquids in public bins.
  • Do not place travel waste at a residential collection point.
